My first blog, some background.

What does shibboleth mean anyway? Is it a superhero? Is it a place? Where does the word originate?

When considering a name for my first-ever blog, I wanted something different. The word shibboleth definitely fit the bill, at least in my parlance circles. According to the dictionary on my Mac, the word is a noun and means: "a custom, principle, or belief distinguishing a particular class or group of peopleesp. a long-standing one regarded as outmoded or no longer important."

This word seemed perfect because it probably relates to the many and varied perspectives regarding the use of digital technology in relation to education.

For those also interested, the photo used for the header of this blog was found when doing a search for 'shibboleth' using Google images. It appears to be a photo from an installation at the Tate Museum entitled "Shibboleth" by the Colombian artist Doris Salcedo. I'd be delighted to hear from anyone who knows more?

The purpose of this blog is to provide reflections on the relevance and use of digital technologies in teaching (and teacher education). As a teacher candidate, I hope to provide useful and provoking views on what works and what doesn't.

Stay tuned ...

MD.
